Australian children's writer trained in Zoology and Zookeeping.
As a little kid, I spent quite a bit of time sorting through stones to find the ones with sparkly specks in them. I thought the specks were flecks of gold. I also thought I could predict the weather, and solve any problem if I thought about it for long enough.
Now I still search for life's flecks of gold through writing. And isn't it a great feeling when you read a book that offers you that special something too?
Zoology and zookeeping (see photo of me with a young wombat - if only
tasks were so cute and cuddly!), and have been lucky to visit parts of
Africa, Asia, South America,
Now happily immersed in the wonderful world of children's literature, I often find myself writing about animal and nature-related topics (go figure).
Here's a sample of some of my earlierst work, circa approx. 8 years old - a book about my school camp. Hey, you have to start somewhere!
And then I went on to write non fiction for real - spooky!
My books include non fiction picture books and information books about animals, and fiction picture books. I have also written articles, poems and other assorted bits and pieces for young readers.
I was thrilled when my non fiction information book "Great Barrier Reef Under Threat" (Macmillan Education, 2011) received a Commendation (Children's series) in the Royal Zoological Society's Whitley Awards, 2011, and was shortlisted for the Wilderness Society's Environment Award for Children's Literature, 2012.
Getting the chance to snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef and experience its beauty for myself was...well..."great"!
The Great Barrier Reef needs our help - if you get the chance, please add your voice to the outcry that it needs more protection!
"Environments and Sustainability" (Pearson, 2014), which I co-authored, was in a series that won a 2014 Australian Geography Teachers Award, and a 2015 Educational Publishers Award Australia.
My plans for the future? To continue to write for children: fiction and non fiction; Trade and Education. I especially love picture books but try my hand at all sorts of genres. I am excited to have several picture books coming out over the next few years. (See the Recent News link on the top left for more info.) Watching the illustrators and editors work their magic to design each book is nothing short of thrilling.
